It has been a really long time since I knit anything more than a border in garter stitch. I don't mean to sound snooty about it either, because I do quite often churn out entire sweaters or dresses in stockinette in the round (which is one knit stitch after the next). So why not garter stitch? I'm not sure. This simple, staple stitch of the knitting world creates a stretchy, sturdy fabric (tongue twister anyone?) that has great texture. Elizabeth Zimmermann was a huge fan. Are you? I may become one, now that I'm knitting Rowan's Desert from their Savannah Collection. It's a vest knit in two directions, entirely in garter stitch, which creates a tiered look. I'm loving it. It's fast and fun. I can talk, eat, listen to the radio, and parent my kids while knitting this. And in the end, I'll have quite a sophisticated garment to wear. It's an excellent design.
You can knit this, too. Come choose a color, cast on and join us for the Knit Along. It begins next Thursday, June 9th from 11:30 to 1:30 and goes for 5 weeks. Bring a lunch, if you like. Take a break from your day, escape office politics...it's a little yarn-cation. Hope to see you there!
That's a cool vest, can't wait to see how yours turns out!
